Creation Myth
Many
thousands of years ago, there was nothing but darkness and a deep void. Who
knows what was beyond the darkness? Was anything alive in the void? We know
not, but eventually, two small beings, smaller than the eye could see, began to
dance around each other. This dance was intricate and beautiful and
encouraging, slowly turning them into bigger and bigger beings. One very
fateful moment, these being entwined in a way that brought them so close to
each other, not just physically, but emotionally. They leaned into each other
and brought forth a beautiful, glowing light that was like the beautiful auras
of the Northern skies. These lights burst into a glowing display that spread
across the great skies, landing into stars and creating the ground that we stand
on today.
Two beings formed out of the
darkness in full harmony. One was bright and golden, long hair dancing in the
skies and a radiant smile full of warmth. The other was silver as the moon,
cold but lighting the way towards him, keeping the way lit for those who need
it. Together they balanced the world and gave time for work and time for rest.
The first being, Day, shown bright and golden and watched over in the sky as
the sun. She sat upon the sun spinning her threads and knitting the creatures
of the day and carefully whispering the harmony that would bring them together.
Flowers that grew in fields in vibrant colors, bees to pollinate the flowers
and produce more, and butterflies aside them in bright, radiant, swirling
colors. Day watched over her creations with love and joy, catering to their
needs and maintaining the harmony in them. Though the world was small and with
much less creation in it, the creatures were peaceful and lived in perfect
harmony.
Night rested in the sky as the moon, lighting
the way for Day to join him. During his time, he put Day’s creatures to rest
with darkness and by cooling off the whole world. He gave us the fireflies that
gently lit up the night fields, and the glowing algae along our shores. Night
put his work into building many beautiful sights for Day, showing her all the
amazing wonders of this world that they had made. He built the great mountains
of Sidhe, taller than anything else could be, and capped with beautiful, white
snow. He nestled a great forest inside of the circle of mountains that he
blessed with fertile soil and huge trees. Inside of this forest, it was as dark
as night nearly all the time, but filled with glowing mushrooms and pools of
water. He created the water falls of the South, the great plateaus that they
drop from, and the pools below that collect their mist. Night created the many
glorious spectacles that we hear so many stories of for his love, Day.
But peace did not last.
Many years after Day and Night gave us the universe, the two great beings found themselves fighting more and more. The world would shake during their fights, causing the many creatures to fear and the mountains to move. Out of these fights, they birthed the bitter cold of winter, and the scorching heat of summer. The creatures would become so cold at night, but unable warm themselves. The fireflies became scarce, too cold to move their wings and would hide away at night. Bees would stay in their hives, sometimes for months on end. Butterflies would lay their eggs and go into an eternal hibernation, tired of the chaos born from the bitter fighting. These animals were so pure, made from such love that they could not die. The infatuation of man does not exist without origin, for Night and Day had such an infatuation that they created the whole world to last forever for themselves.
As
the fighting continued, Day and Night would fight for time. The literal days
and nights became unpredictable, sometimes the sun would be out for very long
and sometimes the moon would stay out for a very long time. Day and Night took
to going out onto the world to be among their creations and petition them to
rise against the other. No creatures chose a side, so all suffered. Day would
create wasps that stung for vengeance, and that took over other insect’s nests.
Night would create aggressive owls with large talons and fast tempers in
retaliation. Their quarrels changed the world, going from mild weather and
gentle breezes to chaotic, vicious storms. The animals of Day and Night learned
to work together to find shelter from the many manifestations of rage from
their overlords. However terrible the world was, the smaller beings would still
lean into each other, remembering when the world was peaceful, and Day and
Night were in perfect harmony.
In
this terrible time, beings of great power were born. Inside of the great
mountains of Sidhe was born fairies that are many times the size of man, with
wings that could lift them up, and magic of the mysterious Night. They lived in
the mountains and kept to themselves. Though the creatures of the world would
come to the mountains to seek shelter, or to try and get over the mountains, no
one would answer and no help would come. Though the Sidhe were great and
powerful, they were also reclusive. Very few humans have walked among the
Sidhe, and those that have do not speak of it in detail.
On the worst day of the many fights, the world did not stop shaking and Day and Night fought for control for many hours. Blinding light of the sun switched with complete darkness of Night. No stars shown, no fireflies danced, and all creatures cowered from the great beings of the sky. There was only fear. The creatures of the world began to howl and cry in woeful sorrow, their screams making a cacophonous wail that shook the world on its own. This wail was for rescue and peace. They did not know what rescue would look like. They did not know if their cries would be answered.
But in this moment, Night heard his people. He stopped retaliating, filled with burning rage. In his rage, two beings of great force were born. The first, giant dragons that reside in the great forest. Scales as black as night, eyes the same blue as the hottest flames. They could disappear into shadows in but a moment and incinerate mountains with their breath.
The second was the final great being. In love, creation can be made in beautiful, soaring colors. Warmth that can be felt from what is only seen, and happiness from a smile alone. Love brings forth the wonders of the world, great mountains and waterfalls. The end of love brings destruction. A great force that pushes many away, sometimes forever, and curses their name until the end of time. In this moment, the goddess of death was born, hearing the wailing sounds of the creatures of the world and bringing them peace all at once, wailing in her own right.
In one, short moment, Night and Day lost their creation that they had walked with. The creation went on to eternal peace but they were left with a world that was broken and hurt. Night stopped fighting, resigned to creating his creatures, and left Day to weep on her own. In her sorrow she knit a figure of a human, giving it the abilities to take care of her creation’s children. Many eggs and nests were left behind, and she entrusted the human with her knowledge. She created many, of different colors and placed them in different places in the world. Night watched her creation, not giving them the blessing of slumber or the safety from his dragons and owls. He continued to create in the night; wolves, badgers, and bats all came into existence during this time and inspired fear in many people. But Night also gave humans quiet and still cooled off the world.
Night and Day learned to live with each other in existence, though both have since stopped walking the world with their creation. The world is filled with glorious, wonderful sights; but also filled with the many unknowns of what has been made and how horrifying it is. The goddess of death would take things in their time, relieving them from the constant unknowns and new fears. Day and Night would mourn their creation from afar, also in mourning as they were unable to join them again. Their fights can be seen today, when the moon overtakes the sun and the days become shorter. Their fights are also tame, the looming threat of the goddess of death to not torment those below but to protect them.
When you look upon the night sky, thank Night for his gift of freedom from this chaotic world. When you look upon the sunny sky, thank Day for her gift of peaceful creation and existence. Though this world still knows chaos, we will forever hope to see Day and Night in perfect harmony again.
